Virginia Creeper Trail Information

Over the last 28 years, we have answered many calls and answered millions of questions. Most people ask similar questions, many of which are listed here. Some people look at this page and read the questions to us over the phone. And, some people ask questions that make you say, "WHA!?" Here are a few:

Va Creeper Trail F.A.Q.'s

Planning your first Creeper Trail ride?  Do you have shuttle and rental questions for families and groups?  Check out the information below.  If your questions are not here, please give us a call - 888-595-2453

Your Creeper Trail adventure begins in Damascus, the most common entry point. Visitors can plan to arrive in Damascus to begin their day. They can spend the night and walk to the shop to take the shuttle over to Abingdon trailhead. Then, riding mostly downhill, it's an easy 16-mile ride over to Damascus.

The typical shuttle ride will drop you off at the trailhead in Abingdon (2087') and you will ride downhill to Alvarado (1900") and then on to Damascus (1952').

Yes, there are vault toilets at the trailhead at Alvarado Station. However, there are no other provisions on this half of the trail

Our shuttles depart every 45 minutes from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. (earlier and later with prior reservations). Our shuttles depart from our shop located at 331 Douglas Drive. Plan to arrive 20-30 minutes prior to your shuttle departure for check-in and bike fitting.  Call us to book a shuttle (and bike rental) reservation at 276-475-6262 or 888-595-2453 ext. 1.
We are open for Creeper Trail bike rentals and shuttles all year round. For the off-season shuttle schedule (Nov-March), give us a call.

Crushed limestone and cinders left over from the train days. Firm in most places on the Whitetop to Damascus end, some rocky places on the Abingdon to Damascus end.  It is generally a smooth ride, but can have some rocky or muddy spots, particularly after rain.

The grade is gentle and doesn't require strenuous pedaling. The section from Abingdon to Damascus is more of a gentle downhill with a slight uphill pedal into town, which can be a bit more effort.  Even people who haven't ridden in years can do this ride from Abingdon to Damascus. That's what makes is so great!

THE TRAIL IS NOT CLOSED! However, Hurricane Helene severely damaged the eastern half of the trail between Whitetop and Damascus, and it is currently under repair and construction. The great news is, the 16 miles between Damascus and Abingdon is open and in great shape. Time to go for a bike ride! Give us a call.

The section between Abingdon and our shop in Damascus is almost 17 miles.

From 2 1/2 to 3 hours depending on how leisurely you want to be about it. We suggest that you take your time because there are many beautiful places to stop and "take it all in".

The most popular "Combo Package" (bike rental/shuttle) is $39.99. You can bring your own bike andget the Shuttle Only to Abingdon for $24.99. There are special rates for Kids 12 and under, military, groups of 12 (or more must pay as a group to receive discount).

74 degrees and sunny (Ok, not really, click the weather link above;-)

830am to 6 pm, 7 days per week. Off season (Nov-March) hours 9 am to 6 pm. Call us toll free for hours and for reservations 276-475-6262 or 888-595-2453.

The trail is open year-round. Each season has its advantages. Fall is extremely popular for the vibrant foliage, and spring is beautiful with wildflowers in bloom. Summer is great for taking a dip in the cool creeks along the way, while winter offers wide-open views and less crowded trails. It's important to book in advance during peak seasons.

Helmets are not legally required for adults in Virginia, but they are highly recommended for safety. All reputable rental companies provide a helmet with your bike rental.

Of course. It's a very pleasant ride with grades not exceeding 3%.

Alvarado is a perfect spot for a picknick. There are many great spots for photographing. Along the river is a great chance to see bald eagles, otters, dear, and maybe a black bear.

Not on the upper section. You are in a gorge and the middle of the forest most of the time. Thank goodness we don't have cell towers out there! They work on the Abingdon to Damascus section, depending on your carrier. Damascus has service provided by Verizon. AT&T only works in Abingdon and does not work along the rest of the trail (can you hear me now?). Wi-Fi is available at Hellbender's Cafe in Taylors Valley.

Camping along the trail is fine as long as it's not on private property. The US Forest Service/Mt Rogers National Recreation Area also maintains some nice campgrounds. Look at them at USDA Forest Service or click here. The western section (between Abingdon and Damascus) does not allow camping, as all of the land adjacent to the trail is privately owned.

Yes. We offer a "shuttle-only" service for people who bring their own bikes. It's a great way to save money if you have your own gear.  It helps for you to make a reservation in advance for the shuttle ride.

E-bikes are allowed on the section of trail between Damascus and Abingdon. Follow the rules of the trail - keep right, ride single file, call out loudly when passing on the left, pull off to the side when stopping, obey traffic signs, pack out all litter.

It is always a good idea to dress in layers and bring a rain jacket/windbreaker.  Check the forecast and prepare for a change in the weather.  Wear closed-toed shoes.
